What is Structural Waterproofing?

Structural waterproofing is a common term used to describe the act of waterproofing any structure. More specifically, structural waterproofing is a term applicable to any waterproofing construction project occurring below ground level.

The term ‘damp proofing’ refers to problems with unwanted water ingress above ground level.

Waterproofing Techniques – Type A, B and C

The British Standard 8102:2022 defines three types of waterproofing, Type A, B and C, and advises that two, and in some cases three, of these types should be used to achieve the desired grade of protection in a below-ground structural waterproofing project.

  • Type A (barrier) protection – The Newton HydroCoat System and Newton HydroBond System give protection against water ingress by a barrier membranes applied either internally or externally to the structure.
  • Type B (structurally integral) protection – The Newton HydroTank System ensures structurally integral sealing of joints and protrusions to provide a watertight, reinforced concrete structure.
  • Type C (drained) protection – The Newton CDM System is a combination of products that are internally applied to provide a maintainable cavity drain waterproofing system.

SystemNewton’s advanced range of waterproofing products allow us and those working with our products to design and install effective, robust, and third-party accredited Type A, B and C waterproofing systems.

The British Standard of Waterproofing 8102:2022

Newton will always ensure that the combination of structural waterproofing methods specified will provide the end user with their desired internal environment in accordance with current legislation and best practice.

British Standard 8102:2022 is the ‘Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures Against Water Ingress’, and explains how to waterproof retaining structures using the three types of waterproofing. Professional waterproofing designers should consider using more than one type of waterproofing to provide enhanced protection of the structure to achieve the necessary environmental grade. Combination strategies provide increased waterproofing protection to the structure.

Structural Waterproofing Design

Structural Waterproofing System

The image above shows a typical combination waterproofing design, utilising the Newton CDM Cavity Drain System internally (Type C), Newton HydroBond System externally (Type A), and the Newton HydroTank System incorporating waterbars and waterstops at weaknesses within the RC structure (Type B).

BS 8102:2022 also recommends that the feasibility of remedial measures, as well as the maintainability of Type C waterproofing, be considered within the waterproofing design.

A structure that is waterproofed with the fully maintainable Type C Newton CDM System and complemented by a combination of Type A and B Newton products will also benefit from self-healing membranes and reusable injection hose systems, conforming with the requirement of BS 8102:2022 that the issue of reparability is taken into account.

Examples of structures that would require structural waterproofing systems include:

  • Cellars
  • Basements
  • Properties with earth retaining walls
  • Tunnels
  • Underground car parks
