Flood Defence Systems Installed in South Hinksey, Oxford
Newton System 500 used as a flood defence system in three previously flooded cottages in South Hinksey in Oxford, installed by a Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC)
Installing A Flood Defence System
Heavy flooding conditions devastated the village of South Hinksey in Oxford. As a result, a robust waterproofing/flood defence system needed to be installed to three Listed cottages to prevent such instances reoccurring.
A Newton System 500 waterproofing system was designed and installed by Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC), Stonehouse Basements with Newton 508 Mesh chosen as the waterproofing membrane and Newton 520 with Basedrain and Sump and Pump as the floor drainage system. The Basedrain conduit was installed within a rebate and the channel itself was lined with a cementitious slurry and was water tested to assure that all ingress would make it to the sump chamber.
The two sump chambers were installed in the diagonal corners of all three Cotswold properties with a NP750 and NP400 with a battery back up system to protect the houses in case of power outage. A screed finish was applied.
All three listed properties have been successfully protected against flooding and the system has been tested now on numerous occasions.
- Newton 508 Mesh was installed as part of the flood defence system to follow the period contours of the property and thus did not encroach on internal space.
- The System was acceptable to local conservation offices as it was deemed ‘removable’ for a listed building.
- The cavity drain system allowed the properties to be treated quickly without the need for prolonged drying out times.
