| Damp Proofing Lathbury Barracks, Grade II Listed Building, Gibraltar|
Newton 805 Newlath was used to damp proof a Grade II Listed Building in Gibraltar
Lathbury Barracks is located in the southernmost tip of Gibraltar. It was used as a barracks until as recently as 1998. However it fell into a state of disrepair having been vacant for over 12 years. The local government decided to convert and refurbish the property for use as a sports, dance and youth club. A permanent and trusted damp proofing solution was essential and Newton 805 Newlath was the ideal product.
The building was built from limestone blocks and these were suffering from various forms of dampness. The problem was exacerbated by the fact that the building had been vacant for over a decade. As a result there was major spoiling of the internal finish.
3,000 square metres of Newton 805 Newlath supplied by Interbuild Ltd was applied to the internal surfaces of the walls where dampness was a problem. The damp proof membrane now acts as an inpervious barrier which prevents the dampness and associated salts in the walls from affecting the internal finishes.
‘Dab fixed’ plasterboard was then applied directly to the meshed surface of the Newton 805 Newlath .
Newton 805 Newlath provided a permanent solution for treating the damp walls.
“It is not often that one deals with a company who moves as fast and efficiently as we would like everyone in the industry to be….from enquiry to order in a matter of hours was not down to price, but the result of the professional and superb service received from Toby Champion and his technical team at Newton Waterproofing Systems.”
“The simple yet highly effective membrane solution to the common problems found in 17th and 18th century bastions, tunnels and buildings in Gibraltar has proved to be the easiest and most cost effective permanent solution to the endemic problems of damp and water penetration. I would not hesitate in recommending Newton Damp Proof Membranes to heritage councils and anyone interested in resolving for good, damp related problems whether it’s a basement, a vault or tunnel. Local architects have also shown considerable interests in Newton membranes which looks set to see a promising future looking after Gibraltar’s numerous historic buildings” – Eddie Lucas, Director, Interbuild, Gibraltar
