In essence, waterproofing or tanking a basement involves the application of a system to create the required internal environment. It could be anything from an underground garage to a basement bedroom, there are a variety of methods used, waterproof membranes are well known for keeping the water out of below ground structures, but the choice of solution depends on the degree of dryness required.
In recent times there has been significant product evolution in this field, with manufacturers using more modern technology to overcome historic failings in these types of system.
The BS 8102:2009 Code of Practice for the protection of below-ground structures against water from the ground is the predominant consideration when designing and installing waterproofing systems.
Overall, the Code of Practice outlines 3 system types:
• Type A (barrier protection)
Type A waterproofing systems are barrier membranes which are applied to the structure. The membrane can be applied internally or externally to prevent the ingress of water. We supply a range of ‘Type A’ or tanking products. Newton System 100 (liquid membranes) and System 400 (pre-applied active fully bonded external and drainage membranes)
• Type B (structurally integral protection)
BS 8012:2009 defines Type B as where the structure itself is constructed to be integrally waterproof and the primary resistance against water ingress. The Newton System 300 products are used in structures that conform as Type B waterproofing protection. This range of products is used to waterproof construction and movement joints and service penetrations ensuring concrete structures become integrally waterproof.
• Type C (drained protection)
For Type C protection Newton System 500 uses wall and floor drainage membranes to capture and depressurise any water entering the fabric of the building. Passive or powered drainage mediums then divert water out of the property. System 500 is renowned within the industry for being the most trouble free and effective waterproofing system it is the preferred choice of waterproofing professionals where a guaranteed dry internal space is required.
