What is a Damp Proof Membrane and How Does it Work? In the realm of construction and building preservation, dampness can pose a significant threat to structures. To combat this issue, the use of damp proof membranes has become commonplace, and it is essential to employ effective damp proofing solutions to protect our buildings from moisture.

Newton Waterproofing offers a comprehensive range of damp proofing products. In this article, we will delve into the three primary types of damp proofing products offered and explore their unique applications and benefits.

The Newtonite Internal Damp Proofing System

Newtonite Internal Damp Proofing System 02

One of the flagship solutions provided by Newton Waterproofing is the Newtonite System, which includes high-quality damp proofing membranes for application to internal wall surfaces. These membranes isolate the internal surfaces from any dampness within the wall, ensuring that it will never be affected by moisture or salts, and effectively combat rising damp and water penetration.

The Newtonite damp proofing membranes offer BBA approved performance, are quick and clean to install, and offer a permanent solution for damp proofing above-ground walls. They are also manufactured from durable materials that are rot-proof and resistant to salts and hydrocarbons, and they remove the need to attempt to install a chemical DPC by injecting the wall with damp proof creams.

Damp Proof Membranes (DPMs)

DPMs are an essential product for protecting concrete or screeds from dampness in the ground, or for isolating internal floors from damp substrates.

Newton Waterproofing offers two types of DPM: the physical Dampsafe 802-DPM sheet membrane, and the liquid-applied Epoxy DPM. Both of these membranes act as a barrier to damp, but are applied and used in different ways.

The Dampsafe 802-DPM is a heavy-duty 1200-gauge membrane that offers superior puncture resistance and durability. It is easy to install prior to the installation of the concrete floor or screed, in order to protect these structural elements from damp. The versatile product is also suitable as a vapour barrier, slip membrane, screeding membrane or curing membrane.

By comparison, the Newton Epoxy DPM membrane is applied directly to damp concrete or screed in order to suppress residual construction moisture and rising dampness. This allows for the quick application of flooring, coatings, membranes, levelling compounds and screeds.

Both the Dampsafe 802-DPM and Epoxy DPM products provide long-lasting protection against moisture, ensuring the longevity and integrity of your structure.

Damp Proof Courses (DPCs)

Damp Proof Courses (DPCs) are crucial for preventing rising damp from permeating through porous walls from the ground. As part of our range, DampSafe 809-HP DPC is a high-performance physical damp proof course designed for installation between courses of brick or blockwork. Positioned approximately 150mm above ground level, this robust DPC acts as a barrier, effectively halting the upward movement of moisture.

DampSafe 809-HP DPC is an effective barrier to water and water vapour, compatible with all commonly used building materials, and suitable for horizontal, vertical and stepped damp proof courses. By installing this DPC correctly, buildings and their interior environments can be safeguarded against the damaging effects of rising damp.
