What Are Injection Resins?

Application of Newton Injection Resins

Injection resins are specialised materials used to repair and strengthen cracks, voids, and other gaps or damaged areas in concrete and masonry, and to stem or eliminate leaks through joints or structural defects of earth-retaining structures.

Sealing active leaks is often a two-stage process, first utilising high-foaming resins to stem and control the flow. A permanent seal is then achieved by injecting low-viscosity resins at high pressure that pass through and around the foam to complete the process.

Hybrid injection resins are also available, which foam when in contact with water but can be injected deep into the joint to complete the repair without foaming.

The three main types of resins each possess different qualities that can be utilised depending on the project requirements:

  • Polyurethane (PU) resins are suitable for both temporary and permanent water sealing, reacting quickly in contact with water
  • Acrylic resins are better suited for sealing deep into the cracks or joints as they can be better controlled than PU resins and are generally lower viscosity. This makes them ideal both for injection hose systems, and for permanently sealing fine cracks and joints
  • Epoxy resins are suitable for structural repairs and for repairing dry cracks where there is no water

When Should You Use Injection Resins?

Injection resins are suitable for sealing leaks, repairing structural defects and sealing construction joints in basements, underground parking, tunnel projects, wall/floor transitions, concrete slabs, bridges, construction sites and lift pits, amongst other forms of construction.

Mechanical, chemical and climatic loads can create stresses in concrete, as the tensile load that concrete can withstand is only between 2-10% of its compressive strength. There are many ways in which cracks in concrete can be caused, such as incorrect design calculations, unforeseen loads, incorrect steel placement, shrinkage and excess heat generation.

Newton’s  range of injection resins offer a remedial repair solution, as they can be utilised to close cracks and voids to prevent any substance penetration, to seal against leaks, to flexibly seal across crack flanks and to reinstate structural integrity between the sides of cracks and voids.

What Injection Resin Products Are Available From Newton?

Resin Injection Hose Waterbar

At Newton, we offer a range of injection resin products, and we are proud to be the exclusive UK distributor for Belgium-based injection resin specialists TRADECC since 2019.

Our range includes everything needed to prepare, pump and clean up after installation:

We can also provide UK customers with access to the entire TRADECC range of high-quality, specialist injection resins for water sealing, soil consolidation, structural repair and concrete repair.

TRADECC Acrylic Injection Resins

Tradecc Logo

TRADECC’s high-quality acrylic injection resins can permanently water seal cracks and joints due to good elastic properties and adjustable reaction times. These resins are very suitable for compartment membrane injections and curtain injection in the tunnelling industry.

  • PC 509 Z Acryl – A four-component, elastic acrylic resin with low viscosity that reacts into an elastic, durable gel. Suitable for the water sealing of cracks and voids in walls, floors, concrete constructions and underground structures.
  • PC 509 Rubber Acryl – A five-component, highly elastic acrylic resin with low viscosity. Properties include excellent cohesion upon swelling and good stability. Ideally suited for water sealing underground structures and curtain injections.

TRADECC Polyurethane Injection Resins

PU Resin 6811

TRADECC’s specialist Polyurethane (PU) injection resins can seal water leaks with high hydrostatic pressure or flow. These resins can also be used against high or low water-bearing joints and cracks in concrete structures and below-ground construction.

  • PC Leakinject 2K Flex 6811 LV – A two-component, elastic PU resin with very low viscosity. Developed for second-stage water sealing to walls, floors, underground structures and concrete structures. Also suitable for use with injection hoses.
  • PC Leakinject Hydrogel 6880 – A ready-to-use, single-component PU resin with low viscosity. Reacts in contact with water to form a flexible, closed cell foam that is used for first-stage sealing of leaks and water penetrations (pressurised and non-pressurised) in floors, walls, masonry, underground structures and concrete constructions.
  • PC Leakinject UNI 6816 E – A single-component PU resin and catalyst with low viscosity suitable for first-stage water sealing of big gaps, cracks, or water leaks with high pressure or flow. Reacts in contact with water to form a semi-rigid foam.
  • PC Tunnelinject 2K 6822 LV – A two-component, fast reacting PU resin with low viscosity suitable for the water sealing and consolidation of structures with high water flow or pressure, such as tunnels, shafts and mines.
  • Electric Piston Pump for Resins – The MP455 is a simple and straightforward piston pump for injecting one- or two-component polyurethane resins, and two-component epoxy resins.
