Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Waterproofing
At Newton Waterproofing, we understand the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility in construction. That’s why we are proud to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for some of our products, and that’s why we’re working directly with our suppliers and partners to get more EPDs for our products.
While an EPD is not proof that a product is sustainable, it makes public the environmental impacts that are associated with the life cycle stages of that product. One of the rewards for a project in using products with EPDs, are that they can contribute towards assessment schemes such as BREEAM and LEED, amongst others.
What is BREEAM?
BREEAM is the longest standing and most widely used environmental assessment method for UK buildings. It evaluates a building’s performance across 10 sustainability categories, including energy, water, materials, and pollution.
Why are EPDs Important?
By carrying out a life cycle assessment (LCA) on a product and publishing the data in the form of a verified EPD, manufacturers assist specifiers by contributing towards raising awareness around the environmental impacts of construction products, all of which are quantified using standardised metrics.
The result is that similar products can be benchmarked and compared accurately, and by assessing the environmental credentials of such products, manufacturers can identify opportunities for improvement.
When it comes to design and specification though, EPDs give architects and specifiers the ability to make informed decisions when selecting building materials based on their sustainability credentials.
How do EPDs Contribute Towards BREEAM?
By incorporating construction products with EPDs into your waterproofing specification, you can earn credits towards your BREEAM score. EPDs support a projects’ BREEAM rating in two ways:
- Mat 01 Building Life Cycle Assessment. The data presented in the EPD results tables can be used within a building level life cycle assessment to demonstrate how different options have been considered to improve the design. 7 credits are available in this section including 2 credits for building performance against a benchmark.
- Mat 02 Environmental Impacts from construction products. Up to 1.5 credits are available for using at least 20 products in the build that have their own product-specific EPD.
This not only demonstrates your commitment to sustainable construction and good environmental performance, but also helps you achieve higher ratings without compromising on performance or quality.
