The first and only recycling scheme in the waterproofing industry, the Newton Membrane Recycling Service, has been operating for over three years, collecting unused HDPE plastic membrane from construction sites to be processed before being used to manufacture new construction products.

Over that time the service has continued to grow, with more and more contractors coming on board, and Newton is even investigating ways to expand the service to include more kinds of recyclable waste. To ensure a closed-loop recycling process, the unused HDPE is collected by Newton delivery drivers on the backload from a product delivery.

Newton’s plastic recycling in the time of COVID

Despite the unprecedented coronavirus outbreak this year, Newton have continued to successfully prevent over 2.4 tonnes of plastic from going to landfill. Avoiding over 2,836 kgCO2e of carbon emissions and saving approximately 11,088 kWh of energy, which equates to roughly 394,257 mugs of tea. Surfers Against Sewage Logo

This means that since March 2017, Newton has been able to recycle over 16.1 tonnes of HDPE plastic membrane, avoiding 18,583 kgC02e of emissions and saving enough energy to make over 2.5 million mugs of tea!

Newton Waterproofing continue to work in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage by donating all profits made by the scheme to the marine conservation charity, to help them protect our oceans, rivers, and beaches by tackling plastic pollution.
