Newton’s award-winning, closed-loop Recycling Service has successfully operated since 2017, in collaboration with the company’s nationwide network of Newton Specialist Basement Contractors (NSBC). Our NSBCs store offcuts of Newton’s plastic membranes, which are then collected by Newton when they arrive at the site to deliver new products.

The HDPE membrane is processed at Newton’s headquarters in Tonbridge, Kent, before being collected by a national reprocessor who recycles the granules into new raw material for the construction industry. Newton also donates all profits made by the scheme to the marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage.

Despite the unprecedented coronavirus outbreak in 2020, the service still helped prevent 4.95 tonnes of carbon emissions by stopping 4.31 tonnes of plastic from going to landfill.

Newton’s recycling efforts

In total, Newton has recycled over 18 tonnes of HDPE since 2017, preventing 20.70 tonnes of carbon emissions and saving 80,900 Kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy, which is enough to make almost three million mugs of tea.

This year, Newton is proud to be expanding its recycling service to also collect and recycle our packaging, in the form of the various plastic containers, bottles and buckets in which Newton’s liquid-applied waterproofing products are stored and distributed.

We have already found a reprocessor who can clean and recycle the contaminated plastic containers, and we’ll be working with our existing specialist contractor network to roll out the development in 2021.

We are always investigating ways to expand the service to include more kinds of recyclable waste. We sell over 7,000 products with recyclable tubs and containers each year, so that gives an indication as to how much we can potentially recycle with this expansion. We are committed to helping shape the green agenda and providing sustainable construction options by helping combat the industry’s waste problems. We also want our customers to know that when you work with Newton, you are using a socially responsible company with sustainability at the top of its agenda.” Warren Muschialli, Newton Waterproofing’s Managing Director.

Part of Newton’s commitment to sustainable development is showcased in the recent certification of the Newton CDM waterproofing system to the BES 6001 standard by BRE Global. As the first UK waterproofing supplier to have an entire waterproofing solution certified, we are extremely proud of this achievement.
