Newton Waterproofing, the UK’s leading independent supplier of structural waterproofing systems, launches its bi-annual Sustainability update.
Sustainability in waterproofing has always been a primary focus for the family-owned business, with the company taking steps to tie their recycling and sustainability initiatives into the other industry-leading services. The long-term goal is to drive the industry towards ending plastic waste through innovative sustainability initiatives.
The largest producer of plastic waste is the packaging industry, however, the construction industry ranks a close second. Each year, the industry produces over 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste. Consequently, Newton therefore aims to continually reduce their contribution towards this in-house sustainability measures such as their Newton Membrane Recycling Service and recycled product range.
The fact that the recycling scheme is no longer the only service of its kind in UK waterproofing, shows the clear steps that specialist contractors have been making to reduce their product waste and improve efficiency. It also points to the increasing emphasis that is being placed on sustainability throughout the construction industry.
Newton and their Specialist Basement Contractors work in partnership to ensure the smooth running of the Recycling Service. This includes actively collecting and recycling HDPE waterproofing membrane waste, and the plastic and metal containers from liquid waterproofing products from across the UK, all for reprocessing, recycling and reuse in construction.
Overall, since 2017 Newton has prevented 21.87 tonnes of HDPE membrane from going to landfill, and in 2022 alone, they have collected 66 bags of waste and recycled 1.248 tonnes of plastic. When compared to last year’s Sustainability Report, this is already over half of the number of bags returned in 2021! This quantity of plastic also equates to avoiding the release of 1.42 tonnes of CO2 emissions and saves 5,604 kilowatt hours of energy, which would be enough to make 199,284 mugs of tea.
The organisation looks forward to continuing to develop their sustainability targets throughout 2022, and into 2023, and intends to engage with even more companies to help them achieve their goals.
