Newton Waterproofing have been shortlisted for the ‘Commercial Waste Reduction Initiative’ Award at the 2018 National Recycling Awards.

MRW2018

The awards ceremony, which takes place on Thursday 28th June at the London Hilton on Park Lane, London, brings together professionals from all across the recycling and waste management spectrum in order to recognise and celebrate the top standards of best practice and innovation.

What has Newton been recycling?

The Newton Membrane Recycling Service tackles an inherent problem in UK waterproofing that no other supplier has yet managed – what to do with the hundreds of tonnes of HDPE membrane off-cuts that are produced by projects across the UK each year, and consequently sent to landfill. Although such off-cuts are too small to be valid for reuse in the waterproofing industry, they are made from virgin HDPE that is perfect for recycling.

With this in mind, Newton’s recycling service collects these off-cuts from dozens of projects across the country via Newton’s nationwide network of Specialist Contractors, before back-loading it via Newton’s own vehicles when making deliveries, therefore avoiding any extra carbon emissions.

Once processed and chipped at Newton’s head office in Tonbridge, the material is collected by a third-party recycling organisation and manufactured into new construction products, therefore creating a completely closed-loop recycling process.

The results so far

In its 6 months of activity in 2017, the recycling service collected and recycled 3.255 tonnes of HDPE membrane, which can be quantified with the following measurements:

  • Recycling this material has avoided the release of 3.74 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) into the atmosphere
  • Creating the same emissions from fuel would burn 1,702 litres (1.24 metric tonnes) of petrol
  • These quantities are equivalent to generating 14,616 Kilowatt Hours (kWh) of energy
  • At an average of 0.028 kWh per cup, this would be enough to make 519,690 cups of tea!
quotation marksNewton Managing Director Warren Muschialli has been involved in setting up the service since its inception, and had this to say about the announcement:
“Implementing a service such as this, which no one has ever done before in our industry, has taken a huge amount of investment, both in terms of the 2 years of development and the personnel and financial requirements. To therefore be recognised with a shortlisting at one of the most prestigious recycling awards ceremonies in the country is massively gratifying. Of course we’d love to win, but just to be shortlisted is an award in itself!”
