Here at Newton, we have always been committed to removing the stigma surrounding mental health. As a business we have taken steps such as making sure our employees have access to a Mental Health First Aider, and holding mental health workshops, with the aim of providing awareness of the impact of poor mental health and encouraging conversation in the workplace.
This year, in Mental Health Awareness Week, we have taken another step forward in our commitment to improving mental health in the construction industry by signing the Building Mental Health charter. By signing the charter, we pledge to continue educating our employees to help reduce mental health discrimination with ongoing training and keeping up the conversation.
“Every working day, two construction workers take their own life. We have to educate everyone in our industry to recognise the signs and symptoms of our colleagues that are suffering from stress, anxiety or depression and start the conversation to assist in their recovery.” Building Mental Health, 2021.
According to data from the Health & Safety Executive, over 400,000 days of work were lost in 2017-18 due to poor mental health in construction, demonstrating a crisis being experienced not only by construction employees and their families, but the UK economy as a whole.
“By signing the Building Mental Health charter, we are proud to be demonstrating our commitment to challenging the stigma surrounding mental health. Newton has provided workshops to our employees in the past and we will continue these going forwards, to promote positive mental health and make sure our team is educated on the signs and impact of poor mental health.” Warren Muschialli, Managing Director at Newton Waterproofing.
